Tougher sentences for shoplifters

New guidelines from the Sentencing Council will see shoplifters receive longer jail terms if they cause damage or frighten staff. The move reverses the trend for courts and police to consider shoplifting as a minor and victimless crime. Thieves who steal items such as mobile phones or laptops which contain irreplaceable data of a high personal value to the victim will also face tougher punishments.
